To clean bath and pool toys without the use of harsh chemicals, vinegar and baking soda are your best bet.

Vinegar Solution

For bath toys, combine 2 parts warm water to 1 part white vinegar. This solution will dissolve unwanted dirt or residue due to the vinegar’s acidity. Once the solution is ready, soak the toy(s) into the solution for 10-15 minutes, ensuring that it gets inside the toy as well.

After soaking the toy scrub the surface of it with a small brush, rinse, and dry it with a towel or set it off to the side to air dry. Always ensure that the toy is upright when drying, minimizing the amount of water remaining within the toy. Once it’s dry it’s ready for play time again!

Baking Soda Solution

Pool toys on the other hand need different treatment. If your pool contains chlorine, the chemical should be enough to keep the toy sanitized, but if you start to notice it getting slimy it’s probably a good time to clean it.

If you want clean pool toys naturally, baking soda is a great option. The process is similar to the vinegar solution; mix 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1 quart of warm water. Prep the toys by drying them first before cleaning.

Soaking smaller items will ensure maximum coverage. Larger items, like inflatables, should be wiped on the surface then rinsed. The baking soda and water solution will scrub dirt, algae, and chemicals off of your child’s favourite toy preventing mold from forming and getting them sick.

Deep Clean

For a more thorough cleaning, a mixture of chlorine bleach and water will sanitize and clean your child’s favourite water toys.

This method should be used sparingly and only if traces of mold are found on bath toys as high amounts chlorine bleach can be harmful for children. With that being said, combine 1 tablespoon of chlorine bleach to 1 gallon of water to create the solution. Soak the toys in the solution for 2 minutes ensuring they are submerged. After soaking, rise them thoroughly and let them air dry in an upright position. Once they are dry they’re ready for bath time!

This solution is also best for plastic pool toys. It can also be used on foam toys like noodles, but because foam is porous bacteria and mold and grow quickly. If mold is found in foam toys, it’s best to replace them.

The chlorine solution for pool toys has a slight variation. Instead of 1 tablespoon of bleach, the solution calls for 2 tablespoons of chlorine bleach to 1 gallon of water. Once the solution is ready, dip a brush into the solution and start scrubbing away.

After cleaning the toys, thoroughly rinse each toy with water and let it air dry.

Storage After Play

Cleaning your child’s toys is just half of the equation for preventing mold and mildew growth. Storing them properly will greatly decrease the chances of mold and mildew growth on their bath and pool toys.

At the end of a splash in the bath or pool, make sure that each toy is:

  • Rinsed and rid of any excess water
  • Completely dry (with towel or set to air dry)
  • Placed in a well breathable, low moisture environment
