What this water safety skill is
It sounds simple, but many young children cannot get out of a pool by themselves. They reach the wall and hold on, but cannot lift themselves up. This skill starts with finding the steps or ladder and climbing them. Then it moves on to climbing out over the edge.
Most children learn it alongside getting in and moving around where they can stand. Once they can get out on their own after a normal swim, the next step is getting out after a fall in.

Why it matters
Knowing the way out.
Your child learns to look around and spot the nearest steps, ladder or edge, in any pool.
No more being stuck at the wall.
A child who can climb out does not have to wait for a grown-up to lift them.
Steadier on wet steps.
Holding the rail and taking one step at a time helps prevent slips.
More ways to safety.
Climbing out over the edge means the steps do not have to be close.
