What this water confidence skill is
Many important moments in the water start with an instruction. Wait. Stop. Come back to the wall. This skill is about your child hearing, seeing or feeling that instruction and acting on it straight away.
It starts with one step at a time, and builds to short sequences once single steps are reliable. Instructions can be spoken, shown with a hand signal or a picture, or given with a touch, whatever your child understands best. It follows on from choosing the right support, and leads to using skills in a new pool.
Why it matters
Quick responses keep children safe.
Stopping or waiting when asked can prevent accidents around water.
Less stress for everyone.
Clear, familiar instructions make the pool feel predictable and calm.
Built around your child.
Instructions are given in the way your child understands best.
Ready for new places.
Following simple instructions helps at holiday pools, community pools and beyond.
Who it is for
Every learner. Babies and toddlers begin with the simplest instructions, like waiting at the edge, with a hand signal and lots of repetition. Children build up to short sequences. For children with additional needs, your instructor works with you on a set of signals that suits your child. If you are learning as an adult, this usually comes easily, and instructions can be adapted for hearing, language or other differences.
