What this swimming skill is
The side glide is a push from the wall lying on one side, with one arm stretched ahead and the head resting on it. The face turns a little upward, so breathing stays easy. Your child holds that balanced position and slides along, then adds a gentle kick.
It builds on gliding off the wall and balancing on the side. Next come breathing to the side in front crawl and swimming sidestroke.

Step 6: Gliding While Swimming
Side glides come in this lesson along with glides on the front and the back.

Why it matters
Easier front crawl breathing.
Front crawl breaths are taken on the side. Feeling balanced there makes breathing calmer.
Balance without a float.
This is side balance without any support, a real step up in control.
A restful stroke ahead.
It leads to sidestroke, which many adults enjoy because the face stays out of the water.
Who it is for
This is for children, teens and adults who can glide off the wall and balance on the side with a float. Your child is ready when they can hold a steady side position while kicking with support. If you are learning as an adult and want a restful stroke, or find front crawl breathing hard, this is a useful step.
