When starting private swimming lessons in Brooklyn, it's important to know that your swim instructor is the best possible choice for you or your children. Many people are unsure of how to choose the best swim instructor, so we’ve compiled a list of what to look for to help you make the right decision.
1) Find a Brooklyn Swim Instructor Who Meets the Certification Requirements
Finding a swim instructor in Brooklyn that meets your needs hinges on them holding the correct training specifications. What does that look like? Swim instructors should have the following qualifications as a minimum:
- CPR Certification
- First Aid Certification
- Formal Swim Instructor Training/Certification
2) Make Sure the Instructor has Two or More Years of Formal Teaching Experience
For private swimming lessons, it's essential that the swim instructor have formal teaching experience. A lot of people will advertise that they have 15 years as competitive swimmer – but that simply isn't enough when it comes to private swim lessons in Brooklyn. Just because the person has excelled at the sport themselves doesn’t necessarily make them a good swim instructor or coach. In other cases, the teaching experience is just with a few friends and family members, and that also isn't equivalent to true "teaching" experience as a qualified swim instructor.
This is something we screen for when interviewing swim instructors to join the AquaMobile Swim School Team. While a swim instructor may seem perfect on paper, there have been many occasions where we turn down swim instructors in Brooklyn for a job because they struggle to answer questions on teaching basic swim skills. In many cases, they're used to giving informal advice to fellow swimmers who need technique refinement — as a result, they struggle to break skills down into simple steps that are digestible for novice swimmers.
That's why we recommend that the swim instructor have two or more years of formal teaching experience. This ensures that they are confident and knowledgeable, which will translate to a better learning experience for beginning swimmers. With two-plus years of experience, they'll have worked with many different student personalities and learning styles, improving their ability to adapt their teaching techniques to get students to learn quickly and effectively during private swimming lessons in your home pool in Brooklyn.
3) Check that the Swim Instructor is Fully Insured
This is extremely important. Due to cost constraints, many independent swim instructors in Brooklyn have no insurance coverage, which can leave you with major liability costs if an incident occurs. AquaMobile has a multi-million dollar general liability insurance policy to fully insure all our AquaMobile Swim Instructors while they're teaching our clients in Brooklyn.
4) Look for Someone with Experience to Meet Your Specific Needs
Make sure the swim instructor is experienced teaching the age, swim level, and specific needs for you or your child. You may also be interested in looking for a swim instructor with specialized skills for your private swimming lessons in Brooklyn.
Some areas of expertise may want to look for include:
- Experience teaching children with special needs
- Experience in parent & tot swim lessons or infant swim lessons
- Specialized in certain skills (diving, synchro, etc.)
- Competitive swim coaching
- Endurance and fitness swim lessons
Determine what specific learning goals you have for your private swim lessons to find someone who is able to meet your individual needs in Brooklyn.
5) Do a Background Check
Consider getting a background check done on the swim instructor. This is especially important if they are coming to your own home in Brooklyn. Knowing that the swim instructor is trustworthy and responsible will give you peace of mind, particularly if they're working with your children. Each AquaMobile Swim Instructor must pass this step as part of the normal hiring process.
6) Look For a Personality Fit with Your Child
Once you know that the instructor is qualified and experienced swim lessons, do a temperature check on the connection between the teacher and student. Do the personalities mesh well? Can the swim instructor explain concepts in a way that makes sense to you or your kids?
Some aspects of their personality to consider include:
- Does your child respond better to a high energy or calm instructor?
- Are you looking for someone who will be more firm or lenient?
- Do you want a more relaxed or strict lesson plan?
Having a strong bond between the swim instructor and child will allow for:
- Eagerness to participate in swim lessons
- More confidence in the water
- A more fun learn to swim experience
To make sure you’ve found the right swim instructor in Brooklyn, especially if you're conducting the search independently, make sure you speak with the instructor before the first swim lesson to get a sense of their personality.
Why Water Safety Is Important
Learning how to swim is an invaluable life skill — and a great way to have some fun! And instilling fundamental swimming skills is extremely important for babies and toddlers in particular. We've gathered a few startling facts about water safety that underscore its importance:- Drowning is the third-leading cause of unintentional death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths.
- There are an estimated 372,000 annual drowning deaths worldwide.
- Global estimates may significantly underestimate the actual public health problem related to drowning.
- Children, males and individuals with increased access to water are most at risk of drowning. - World Health Organization (WHO), 2014
Water safety is an important matter in any home, especially if you have a toddler or a young child. Swimming pools in Brooklyn are fun to play in, but they can also be deadly. Instances of child drownings are a leading cause of death for children 14 and under. According to the Red Cross, more than 1 in 5 water fatalities is a child aged 1 to 4. Here at AquaMobile in Brooklyn, we hold your child’s water safety in high regard. These are AquaMobile Swim School’s drowning prevention tips for parents to ensure your children stay safe in and around your home swimming pool.

How long will it take for me to learn how to swim?
A: Each student is different different and progresses at different rates. We tailor our private swim lessons in Brooklyn toward the individual. By booking one of our AquaMobile Swim instructors in Brooklyn, we'll be able to get a better grasp on the skill level of the student within the first lesson or two to give you a better estimate, which will also depend on how in depth the student would like to learn. How frequently should I book private swim lessons?
A: Most students, especially children, thrive and tend to progress faster with a more intensive program of swimming lessons — that means 2-3 lessons per week, with 3 being ideal. Intensive programs of everyday private swimming lessons are also effective and work best for families who vacation or have busy summer schedules. Research has shown that skills are better acquired with regular intensive lessons rather than intermittent practice. With our experience over the past 13 years, we agree! Can I book a trial private swim lesson in Brooklyn?
A: Trial swim lessons are not a good indicator of the progress that will be made throughout a series of 8 or more private swim lessons. The first swim lesson often establishes comfort level, as this is where the bonding and rapport between student and swim instructor begins to form. It can take 2-3 swim lessons to build that connection and trust between teacher and student, and to see visible progress. We do have a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee — if you aren't satisfied after your lesson, we'll set you up with another swim instructor in Brooklyn free of charge. If that does not remedy the problem, we're happy to provide a full refund. How soon in advance should I book my AquaMobile private swim lessons in Brooklyn?
A: As soon as possible. Times tend to fill up quickly once we open registration, especially for times during the second half of June through August. There is often more availability in May and the first half of June. AquaMobile swim lessons are also available year round, but availability may be more limited in some areas. Hey I'm Jahna! I was born and raised right outside of the Philadelphia area to two parents who love the water and instilled within their children a similar appreciation, at an early age. I firmly believe that knowing how to swim is a necessary life skill and swam competitively in grade school. Following in my father's footsteps, I was also a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard for four years at the Greater Plymouth Community Center in Pennsylvania. I have experience teaching swim lessons to children ages 3 to 8 as well as the occasional adult, with abilities ranging from first time swimmers to intermediate swimmers looking to hone their stroke. Skills taught include: freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. I graduated from Boston University College of Fine Arts with a Bachelors in Performance and excitedly moved to New York to indulge another passion of mine which is playwriting! I love to sing, tell stories, and find new ways to creatively engage children (and adults!!) and look forward to doing so while encouraging others to learn to and love to swim!
