Playing in the pool is often times the best way for you to teach your child to swim and love the water. When they see the pool as fun and enjoyable through songs & games, even a little water splashing on their face is nothing to cry about! Teach your child to swim at home with these swimming songs. They’ll be swimming in no time!
Teach Your Child How to Swim With: Ring Around The Rosie
Hold hands with your child in an area of the pool where both of you can reach the floor. If your little one is not yet walking, hold them facing you under their arms.
As you sing the following song, turn around in a circle slowly.
“Ring around the rosy, Pocket full of posies, Ashes, ashes, We all fall down”
When you say “we all fall down”, submerge under water together. If they are still weary of going under water, you can practice submerging only one part of the face like the chin or cheek. Check out this article on utilizing bath time to condition your baby to water. If they are alright to submerge completely, let them go all the way under!
This song teaches little ones to become comfortable and accustomed to getting their face wet. Soon, they’ll be diving under water to pick up sinking toys and objects!
Teach Your Child How to Swim With: Humpty Dumpty
Sit the child on the edge of the pool or a foam mat if available. Then hold their hands and sing:
Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall,
Count 1, 2, 3.
On three, pull your child into the water. If they are still uncomfortable going under water, do not let them slip below the surface. If they are alright to submerge completely, let them go all the way under!
This song teaches the babies to feel the sensation of free falling into the water and to return back to the surface.
You’ll notice that this song will help to boost their confidence levels.
Teach Your Child How to Swim With: Teddy Bear
Teddy Bear is a song that you follow along with actions. It’s lots of fun and tots learn to sing along!
Hold your child around the waist facing away from you.
Sing: “Teddy bear, Teddy bear, turn around”.
As you sing, turn yourself and baby around in the water.
Sing: “Teddy bear, Teddy bear, splash the ground.”
Splash yours and baby’s hands in the water.
Sing: “Teddy bear, Teddy bear, reach for the sky”
Have you little one reach as high as they can.
Sing: “Teddy bear, Teddy bear, jump up high.”
Lift your child as high as you are comfortable to do so out of the water.
Sing: “Teddy bear, Teddy bear, wave goodbye.”
Wave to each other, or to anyone else who you might be in the water with.
Teach Your Child How to Swim With Speckled Frog
This fun song has your little one excited to jump into the pool like the little speckled frog.
One little speckled frog
Sat on a speckled log
Eating the most delicious bugs. Yum! Yum! [ You can splash water up towards them at this point]
One jumped into the pool
Where it was nice and cool
Now there are no green and speckled frogs.
When you say “One jumped into the pool” your little swimmer can jump in towards you in the water.
Remember that jumping games and songs should always be done at a safe depth, so depending on the height of your child you may wish to move to a shallower or deeper part of the pool. Generally waist deep water for the parent is the best and safest spot for infants and young children.
